Field note
Notes from an AI ethics sabbatical
Why I am making space to study the institutions, incentives, and assumptions inside technical systems.
I am taking a sabbatical to study AI ethics with the attention it deserves: slowly, across disciplines, and with room to change my mind.
Engineering work rewards momentum. Ethical questions often ask us to pause long enough to notice who benefits from that momentum and who absorbs its costs. I want to get better at holding both modes at once.
This site is where I will keep the work in public: essays, reading notes, and practical observations from software testing and product development. It is less a finished position than a record of learning.
The questions I keep returning to are simple to state and hard to answer. What does meaningful accountability look like in a software team? How do we test for harms that are unevenly distributed? When should a capable system remain unbuilt?
I do not expect tidy conclusions. I do hope for sharper questions—and engineering practices sturdy enough to carry them.
